Wool · Silk · Linen — Natural Fiber Symphony
Aether is a summer-weight fabric series born from the masterful blending of three natural fibers that have defined luxury textiles for millennia: wool, silk, and linen. Each fiber brings its unique character — wool's warmth and resilience, silk's lustrous softness, linen's crisp breathability — to create fabrics that excel in warm-weather tailoring while maintaining the refinement expected of fine suiting.
The name "Aether" (云裳) evokes the lightness of clouds and the elegance of flowing garments, perfectly capturing this series' balance of substance and airiness, structure and fluidity.
Wool is a warm natural fiber. Compared to other animal fibers like cashmere, merino wool offers exceptional strength. Compared to silk, it provides warmth and elasticity. Compared to cotton, it offers superior resilience. These properties make wool the ideal base for blended fabrics.
Wool's natural crimp (10-50 microns compared to silk's 40-115 microns) provides inherent texture and loft. The fiber's hygroscopic nature allows it to absorb moisture without feeling damp, while its natural scales create micro-air pockets that regulate temperature. In blends, wool contributes structure, warmth, and durability.
For Aether blends, we use Super 110s Merino wool — refined enough to blend seamlessly with silk and linen while maintaining the series' warm-weather character.
Silk is a smooth animal fiber. Its fineness (10-13 microns compared to wool's 15-25 microns) gives it unmatched softness and luster. The triangular protein structure of silk fibers acts like prisms, creating the signature shimmer. We use two types in Aether:
Mulberry Silk (桑蚕丝): Cultivated silk from domesticated silkworms. Long, uniform fibers create smooth, lustrous fabrics with excellent drape and a cool hand. The protein structure naturally resists bacteria and allergens.
Tussah Silk (柞蚕丝): Wild silk with shorter, coarser fibers. More textured and matte than mulberry silk, it adds rustic character and superior durability to blends.
Silk contributes fluidity, comfort against skin, moisture wicking, and a subtle luster that elevates the fabric's appearance without excessive shine.
Linen is a cool plant fiber with exceptional breathability. Derived from flax stems cultivated since 8500 BC, it remains one of the strongest natural textile fibers. The hollow structure allows superior air circulation and moisture evaporation.
Linen's diameter (15-25 microns) falls between wool and silk. At 50-75% lower elasticity than wool, linen provides firmness and body to blends. Its natural stiffness creates crisp hand-feel and defined structure.
In Aether, we use long-staple linen for its smoother texture, reduced pilling, and superior drape compared to standard-staple linen. The longer fibers (often 50cm+ compared to 20-30cm) create fabrics with exceptional comfort and longevity.
The classic Aether balance. Wool provides body and resilience, silk adds softness and subtle sheen, linen contributes breathability and crisp structure. Ideal for tailored jackets and suits that perform across spring/summer seasons.
The luxury blend. Increased silk content delivers enhanced drape, luster, and next-to-skin comfort while maintaining structure. Perfect for special-occasion suiting and high-end ready-to-wear collections.
The summer specialist. Maximum breathability from linen's hollow fibers, with silk smoothing the hand-feel and adding subtle luster. Exceptional moisture management and quick-drying properties make this ideal for tropical and resort wear.
Note: Multiple other ratio combinations available. The precise blend can be adjusted to emphasize different performance characteristics — wool for warmth and structure, silk for comfort and drape, linen for breathability and summer suitability.
Aether embodies Colun's commitment to natural-fiber innovation. By combining wool's resilient structure, silk's flowing comfort, and linen's crisp breathability, we create fabrics that adapt to the wearer and the season.
